Bandy Legged Chicken

walking with legs bent outwards

Sarah : My 7 month old Australorp chicken has become very badly bandy-legged. She can move but sits after a few steps, she is still laying beautiful eggs. I paid $65 for a visit to the Vet and she said that there is nothing wrong with her, very healthy chicken, with healthy clean feet???? Clearly there IS a problem, I’m reasonably sure she is not acting. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks and greetings from Cairns, Australia. Sarah Mills and Dixie

Thanks to Micah and Vonda Dunn for these photos and details of their coop. “We finally got our new coop built a couple of months ago. As you can see, I made some changes to the plan. It weighs a ton, so I do not believe this coop will not be moved from its current position. I built this in my barn and it took a bobcat to move it to the foundation.

Inside the run – access door

Changes:

Doors – I decided to build triangular doors. The original design called for small rectangular doors.

Roof – I decided to shingle the roof. I found a guy that was selling his leftover shingles on Craigslist.com. If you are not familiar with this site, it is like eBay, however it does not cost to buy or sell items. I shingled 1/4 of the run portion. This does not keep all of the water out of the run and I have decided that I might actually build shutters on 1 side to assist with this issue.

Our Son Noah – I’ve Been Farming Too Long. Is this the new country music star?

We are very pleased with the coop. It adds a lot to our property and I expect to build something as nice or better for our Americaunas.”
